Meanwhile, many cars already making those journeys have seats sitting empty. TravelDuckling starts with that simple opportunity: help people share a journey that is already being planned.

For a driver, sharing available seats can help offset travel expenses. For a rider, contributing to a shared journey can be more affordable than paying for an entire private ride or driving alone. The aim is a fair exchange that makes sense for everyone, with clear expectations before people agree to travel together.

Our Shared rides area connects people going a similar way. Our separate Group trips area helps people come together around an experience. Both serve the same purpose: make it easier to say yes to the places and people that matter. Actual savings depend on the route, the contribution, and the alternative you would otherwise choose.

Making better use of the cars already on the road is one way to travel more thoughtfully. When people share a car instead of taking separate car journeys, they can reduce the total distance driven across those vehicles. With less fuel burned, those journeys can produce less carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

The benefit comes from the journeys we avoid. A shared ride is most useful for the planet when it replaces another car trip and keeps extra driving for pickups and drop-offs modest. The vehicle, occupancy, detour, and the rider’s alternative all matter; replacing a walk, bike ride, or public-transit journey does not offer the same benefit.

That is why our vision centers on compatible routes and seats in journeys people already intend to make. We want to make a thoughtful choice easier—from a local ride to an intercity visit—while encouraging people to choose the travel option that fits their needs and leaves a smaller footprint.

Feel a little more connected.

We can be surrounded by people and still feel disconnected. The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory described an epidemic of loneliness and isolation and called for stronger social connection. For us, that is a reason to create more opportunities for everyday human contact.

A shared journey can begin with a hello. A group hike can bring together people who would not have met otherwise. A conversation, a shared view, or a new travel companion can turn a practical plan into a meaningful experience. TravelDuckling aims to make space for those moments, without assuming every ride has to become a friendship.

Community grows through choice, respect, and trust. People should be able to review who they travel with, discuss their plans, and decide what feels comfortable. A quiet ride belongs here, too. Our hope is that sharing the road—and occasionally an adventure—helps more people feel welcome to take part.
